National Citizen Service (NCS)

NCS runs three times a year in spring (year 12), summer (year 11 & 12) and autumn (year 12). Programs take place during school and college holidays and consist of up to two short stays away from home, a planning week and 30 hours of part-time work spent on a community project.

Who can take part?

NCS is open to Year 11 and Year 12 students at schools and colleges, as well as other 16 and 17 years olds not currently in education.

NCS is for everyone regardless of income, interests, background, abilities or ambitions. The program is backed by the government so costs no more than £50 per child for everything, including travel and accommodation. However, bursaries are available in cases of financial need. All staff are DBS checked (previously CRB) and have appropriate training to work with young people.

Why is it great?

NCS provides a potentially life-changing opportunity for you that can significantly improve motivation and engagement. It offers important evidence for your UCAS statements and job applications and it can also be integrated with Citizenship lessons and the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award residential section.

There are 4 phases to NCS:

Phase 1: Get active Action packed week of outdoor pursuits and team building exercises at the Kingswood site in Doncaster’s Dearne Valley..

Phase 2: Get involved: home residential at Wirral Country Park Thurstaston Campsite. This is the young people’s chance to explore their local area, working with local organisations. Learn new skills and gain valuable experience.

Phase 3: Make a Mark: This phase is about making a difference in the community. Planning a social action project and putting the young people’s plans into action.

Phase 4: Continue the Journey: Celebration event at the end of the project. Young people will receive certificates and recognition for their work.
